The Cultual Immersion Retreat offers you and your team the opportunity to integrate yourselves into a Peruvian community and experience the authentic culture of this country. You will stay with local families in the Sacred Valley of the Incas and participate in a local volunteer project involving agriculture and ceramics.
Upon arrival, you will be picked up at the Cusco airport and transported to a village in the Sacred Valley outside of the city. Here you will be placed with host families where you will live and work with them. You will have a chance to meet your family and be given an orientation to your hosts as well as the village where you will be staying. You will be able to take part in local celebrations within your host family as well as the community. Also, the family will cook your meals, which will be traditional local dishes of the Andean Mountains.
When you volunteer, you will have the opportunity to work directly with the family, helping them with the planting, maintenance, and harvesting of crops depending on the time of year it is. In addition, you can help to tend the livestock including cattle, sheep, pigs, and other animals.
You will also be able to learn the art of textiles, weaving, and ceramics. These methods are used by the locals to create crafts that they later sell in the market to support their families. You will learn the art of their craft and use your creativity to help support the family.
Please note that the accommodations and meals will be very basic due to the extremely remote setting of these communities. Hot showers will not be available and running water is not guaranteed. Locals bath in a mix of boiled and cold water that they put in a bucket.
Another important point is that no English is spoken in these communities. Quechua is the local language. Most locals also speak Spanish as a second language. It is still possible to have a rewarding and full experience even though there will be a language barrier. Furthermore, the community is very warm and welcoming to all volunteers.
After volunteering for a week in the Sacred Valley, you will say good bye to your host families and be picked up for your two day Machu Picchu Tour. You will first be transported to Aguas Calientes, the town at the bottom of Machu Picchu, where you will be taken to your hotel. You will have the afternoon and evening free to enjoy the natural hot springs or explore some of the sites around the town such as the Mandor Waterfalls or the butterfly farm.
The next morning you will take the bus to Machu Picchu where you will have a guided tour of the Inca ruins, followed by free time to explore the area yourself and take photos. After that you will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes where you can pick up your bags from your hotel, and then will take the train back to Cusco in the afternoon. We will take you to your hotel where you can relax for the evening.
The last day you will check out of your hotel and be transported to the Cusco airport.
